Women of the ELCA

The Women's organization of Our Savior's is called Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA).

The WELCA organization is sub-divided into small groups called "circles". These circles provide an opportunity for friendship, prayer, and Bible study. WELCA also hosts several large group gatherings during the year that are open to all women in the congregation.

As the women’s organization of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA), we provide the opportunity for women of all ages who want to grow in faith and live out their faith.

    How we do this:
  • By supporting and equipping women for all levels of service and ministry
  • Strengthening and affirming gifts
  • Providing spiritual development and leadership training opportunities
  • Advocating for an end to social injustices, such as women and children living in poverty and racism
  • Giving to those who cannot help themselves, such as quilts through partnership with Lutheran World Relief

WELCA Activities

Bible Study:

Monthly W-ELCA Circle Bible study/meetings:
  • Esther   1st Tuesday, 9:30am
  • Eunice   1st Wednesday at Perkins, Noon
  • Priscilla  1st Thursday, 7:00pm
The core theme for September 2010 - May 2011 is "The People of God: Unity in the Midst of Diversity"; a more detailed monthly theme can be found at Lutheran Woman Today Magazine

Each circle has a designated hostess and/or bible study leader for each meeting.

Support:

Circle meetings are a great way to get know other women in an informal supportive environment.

Women of our WELCA unit also join with other WELCA units in the area for "cluster events" to learn and support mission outreach together.

The WELCA group also puts on special events throughout the year to support each other in prayer, study, community awareness, health, fun, ministry, and mission.

Action:

Do-Day ladies (and gentlemen!) meet on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 9:00am to make quilts, blankets, layettes and soap for Lutheran World Relief, EWALU Bible camp, and others.

The Women also organize and run a biennial (every 2 years) Rummage Sale. Items left over from the sale are distributed among many community organizations including Crossroads, Olivet Mission, Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity.

For the past several years, the Women have sponsored a "themed-Tasting Bee": Ticket holders enjoy 1 tsp. of 45 different foods which are all in the cookbook attendees receive for the cost of the ticket.

Every two years the Women sponsor a Meal in the Upper Room. It is a reflective meal experience of what it could have been like to celebrate the Passover Meal in the upper room with Jesus and his disciples. Using readings from the New Testament and foods that were common in Jesus' times, the participants gain a deeper understanding of Jesus' life and his mission.

The Prayer Chain is for church members who have a concern (health, personal, etc) about a family member or friend. The prayer chain leader begins the call chain and prayers are offered. Please contact Ardie Fevold for more information.

WELCA also contributes financially to community organizations. Forty percent of the WELCA budget is designated for Social Concerns and local Stewardship.

A Fall Thankoffering service is an opportunity for the entire congregation to celebrate and continue their commitment to the ministries of the Women’s organization. The offering supports the community outreach and stewardship of our group.
